Big companies + great domain names = gold

    http://www.alledia.com/blog/domain-n...-domain-names/

Interesting stuff. Basically companies that have great domains names to go with their brands will have more advertising and cross-promotional opportunites in the future.

Odd too that so many NFL teams don't own their domain names. Theres quite a few more who don't .... dolphins.com, bills.com, chiefs.com, cardinals.com etc.

I outbid the SJsharks for sharks.com and I'll bet they regret it.

np - it'll be interesting to see which other brands think that their logos have the power to stand along like that.

also fun to see how far sites such as http://cardinals.com/ go to avoid any accusations of typo-squatting. I can't imagine "Bird Feeder" pays too well as a keyword.

The popular thinking is that people will find their team with one extra click. It's really that simple.

I guess I should stick to talking about domaining

Still, Sharks.com - $140,000 (Dec 2005). Thats probably a week's salary for some leading NHL players.

was kidding about the cardinals... as a former st. louis boy, we don't 'recognize' that group of people calling themselves a football team that moved from st. louis to arizona...

anyway, very interesting article, thanks for posting it

I just looked at NBA teams and only Nets, Jazz, Magic, and Wizards do not have clean URLs. Bobcats.com was a functioning business selling bobcats cats - pretty much untouchable from TM angle - as late as last year. I'd love to know what it sold for.

There's a business plan for InnovationHQ. Start selling sharks

    Frank blogged this too:
    http://frankschilling.typepad.com/my...e_to_surv.html

Made the point that we'll probably just be seing large corporations doing this because of the resources needed to build such a recognisable brand.

it"ll be also interesting to know if NBC, Niki, McDonalds,
Mercedes and Target use the same advertising agency
or is this trend becoming popular in the whole advertising business.

Just using the logo will only make the cybersquatting scream deafening.

Initially, they better also list the proper domain address with the logo.

These are some of the domains that will benefit by the advertising
company's assumption that the consumer knows how to type
    the "targetted" domain.

    www.McDonald.com
    www.MacDonald.com
    www.MacDonalds.com

    www.Targets.com

    Nikes.com (no dns)

    www.Mercede.com
    MercedeBenz.com (dead dns - owned by Mercedes-Benz)
    Mercedes-Benzs.com (domain taster since 05)

I didn't want to post it on Frank's blog and add gasoline
    to the fire.

I seem to remember that GregR got a C&D when he owned dolphins.com. But he was clearly serving up some dubious ads if I remember.

talking about dubious ads, why do you have you-know-what ads on your you-know-what acquatic animal website?
