Note to new entrants/Business 2.0 readers re parking/aggregators
The same question comes up over and over and there seems to be some confusion about how parking works.
Parking is designed to convert existing traffic to revenue - it is not designed to create traffic on the domain name.
In the B2.0 article there was an image - this was the important part of it:
Note that it said:
"he directs traffic to an aggregator"
not just
"he directs his domain to an aggregator who adds traffic to it".
If you want to make money from parking you need to be researching into buying domains that already have traffic - not just buying any old name then wondering how you get traffic to it.
Buying traffic to send to a domain that doesn't have any will get your accounts cancelled without pay by virtually all the park services.
added: there is more detail on how parking works further into this thread.

Ok, but how do you no which names will get traffic before registering them
-
I know you're messing, but in the spirit of saving time on that question which also comes up over and over the answer is the part the article didn't go into detail on:
You spend the time and energy on research and getting to grips with the pros and cons of the various tools out there (like overture, alexa, google etc)
Domaining isn't a get rich quick / guaranteed / handed on a plate business model.
When using google for counts - use double quotes for usage counts for multiword terms and set "match type" to "exact" for all search volume lookups. Click here for more info

ill check these prog and read more on the subject .thx

I agree with that but I wonder with regards to type-in traffic - which comes first, the domain name or the traffic? In other words if a name does not exist but a few people are typing the name in for a search, then creating the name will capture that traffic. A way to measure that would be finding (not real likely) a name that has an Ovt. with extension. The problem is finding a new name that some people are searching for but is not strong enough to show up on an ovt. search.
So, correct me if I am wrong, but if those of us who are new and want to make an income should be focusing on buying existing names with established traffic and revenue (with reasonable multiples) and trying to back order names that have traffic with Ovt. with extension through the drop catchers. Then once those traffic names are purchased, send them to an parking company such as Sedo.
That's a mouthful, but is that in the ballpark?

I would say typing it in to go directly to the [presumed] content rather than to "search" as such, but yes thats correct.

Thats certainly one model you can adopt. The key for that model is going for names with high probability of traffic - something that ov combined with the other tools can help to determine but ov's many flaws and limitations should be kept in mind.
Buying domains with known traffic/revenue stats obviously reduces that risk - but likely increases the cost because the risk is less.

when you say an Ovt. with extension
what does ovt means?
-
when you say an Ovt. with extension
That means that when you do an overture search for key words you attach the extension to the word to get a potential sampling of type-in traffic.
Example without extension: cars
Example with extension: cars. com or cars. net etc.

To add to this, a few people have been contacting me asking me to explain how to get to this this stage - so heres a rundown:
1) lock away the credit card and invest time in research - running before you can walk will cost you money. Our domainer glossary should help you get to grips with most common aspects of this business:
http://www.domainstate.com/custom.php3?action=orient
2) remember that if you're adopting the parking model, as so many want to in response to recent articles, that you are looking for domains that already have traffic. The park companies aren't there to add traffic to your domains, they're there to monetize the traffic your domains already have.
3) once you're confident the domain(s) you wish to register/buy have good odds of getting traffic, you need to register them with a registrar or to set up an account with a registrar and have the name transferred to it if buying an existing registration.
4) you will then need to sign up with a park service, initially that will likely be someone like sedo due to the lack of entry requirements in terms of traffic/domain volume.
5) When you sign up, the park service will give you the details of how to link your domain to their service. This will be done via either changing nameservers on the domain at the registrar to those supplied by the park company or, if your registrar supports it, setting up a redirect. This is where people who type in your domain get sent to the park companies offering.
If you get the choice of redirect, then a stealth/frames redirect means that it will retain the original typed url in the address bar vs showing the new url which would be within the park companies domain service.
6) parking is a whole content service - you send them the eyeballs and they provide the entire content that those eyeballs then see. You are paid a share of what the park company receives from the underlying search engine when visitors you send click through to advertisers websites to further their interest.
7) if you want to increase your revenue then you can either look at improving the revenue from the traffic you have by choosing better targetted keywords within the park companies optimisation section (if offered) or you can look at adding more names that have traffic. Looking for ways to send extra traffic to the names you already have will likely get your account cancelled without payment.
Rinse and repeat until desired income level is reached.
Once your traffic levels start to increase its worth looking around at all the other options that may open up to you including other park services like domainsponsor and fabulous.

There is another story in Small Business Opportunities Mag.
Very pie in the sky vs the Business 2.0 story
"Imagine making $1,500.00 day sitting on the couch watching TV"

do you have a link for that story? couldn't find it on the site...

The story does not seem to be on the site ( which sucks)
On Cover it says along the top
YES! $1000 A Day just watching TV.....See Pg. 174
IN the story it says
" We were reading recently of a guy making $3,500.00 on his online affiliation programs. He wont identify himself..... .... perhaps because he doesn't want to take calls."
No first hand documentation pure speculation

thanks for the info... i do love the 'just watch TV myth"...

Good info. So park companies i.e, Sedo montetize the traffic. So for me to start making money from the start I would need to start with a site that already has some traffic. This from what I understand can be done only by buying an existing domain with existing traffic. If I do find an availabe domain for sale, what steps need to be done in order to make an educated analysis that the site is and will produce traffic? (i.e, tools and sites).
One more question besides the .com extention what's the second most popular? It just seems that every name I can think of is taken????????????
Great site!

people visiting sites on-spec doesn't require the site to alrady exist as they are entering the url with no knowledge of what is at the site or whether it does exist. That said, it's 2006 and domains with inherent traffic have been mined like crazy for the past few years so it is much harder to find names that have not already been registered.
If you're buying in the aftermarker, then the safest method for traffic determination is the stats from the seller - although these can be gamed so shouldn't be taken at face value alone.
If stats aren't available to you then using tools like overture, google, alexa and a big dollop of common sense can give a feel for it - no magic bullet though, you'll need to do lots of research to reduce odds of wasting money.

From a type-in volume point of view, I'd think the main cctld's would have the edge over .net/org.
