Sure. General comments welcome here or country-specific comments welcome in the country-specific page. Thanks for participating.

I've observed .biz as the only extension adopted by the true end users. I find you newspapers small businesses such as custom embroidery shops using varsityjackets and several hosting services using .biz
.info and .us I haven't seen gain genuine acceptance.
I have some preconceptions... but open to adaption and modification based on new data. It is possible that extension preferences of a sample of primarily resellers may differ from that of end-users. It is also possible that extension preferences may vary considerably by country. I am interested in as much data from as many sources as possible to inform views and make predictions.

Nepal.... well I live here. .np... practically worthless, I never even considered registering one. From the people I have talked to here... .com seems to be the most popular besides a few large commercial operations here such as www.mos.com.np (about the only place .np are hosted) one of the VERY FEW ISPs here...

Hi Logop, Thanks. I expect that many of the figures for other countries are increasing as well. Main use of the internet users was to get a relative ranking. I have made the update.

Portugal here!... Any chance of you considering it?

For the number of internet users, you may get them from the National Telecom Authority (anacom.pt):
    http://www.anacom.pt/template12.jsp?categoryId=6247

By the end of 2002 there were a total of 5.165.057 internet clients.

For the the number of .pt domains you may get the figures from the registry (dns.pt):
    http://www.fccn.pt/DNS/Estatisticas/...u_option=80002

Note that .pt has a lot of restrictions: only for companies organizations and trademarks, no resales allowed, and all registrations are/were* submitted to a committee for approval.
Annual price of a .pt is about $35

Most large portals and large to medium companies prefer and use .pt instead other TLD's. It also provides more credibility and stability (eg: no hijacking risks).
Companies with operations abroad tend to have both .pt and .com

Some small companies, small portals, individuals, and projects that need to be built fast, tend to prefer .com followed by .net - they are much easier and faster to register and less expensive.

Last figures I saw for China wers 68 million users, I believe Mole can back me on this?

I live in Thailand lots of users here.

Lived in Cyprus for Some years, the figures shown relate to about 25% of the population, I think the real figure is nearer 25,000, probably the most backward of any country about to join the EU! Not very encouraging is it ! Americas opposition!!

China Surpasses Japan in Internet Population, Rating Service Says
China has surpassed Japan to become the second largest global at-home Internet population, the Internet audience measurement service Nielsen/NetRatings reported Monday in Los Angeles. China's Internet population is only next to the United States' 166 million, but only accounting for 5.5 percent of homes in the country.

China has surpassed Japan to become the second largest global at-home Internet population, the Internet audience measurement service Nielsen/NetRatings reported Monday in Los Angeles.

The Nielsen/NetRatings survey of 1,000 randomly selected households across the mainland of China in the first quarter of 2002 found that there were 56.6 million Internet users in the country. This was a dramatic leap from 22.5 million users in the country at the end of January 2001.

China's Internet population is only next to the United States' 166 million, but only accounting for 5.5 percent of homes in the country, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.

The survey also found Chinese men aged 16 to 34 dominated Internet access and usage at home. Among those with home Internet connections who also surf elsewhere, home was found to be the preferred venue for Internet surfing, accounting for 53 percent, followed by Internet cafes and offices.

Most of China's Internet users rely on narrowband, dial-up access. Until more Chinese households have telephone lines, penetration rates could remain low, according to Nielsen/ NetRatings.

The MX namespace is no longer open for registration at at the second level (i.e., domain.mx). The namespace has recently opened for reg at the 3rd level (i.e., domain.com.mx). Just though to let you know so the .mx poll page can be updated.

If anyone's interested, the space is open for registering top generic words at only reg fee cost.
