Really awesome pics...I love the one surrounding the car!

    Thanks ILI.

Thanks for the interest in my site.

Since you are all a lot more web savvy than me, I wonder if you could give me some idea as to what I might expect from advertising, should I go down that path.
Currently 1000 hits day. I'm not sure how to tell if these are unique or not. I use Sitemeter.
I have resisted ads so far as I don't really need this to be an income producing site.

    Nice.

Just a hunch, but I don't think my town would allow that.

Hi tesladownunder and welcome to DomainState. I also use sitemeter and have wondered how to quantify uniques as the results are normally listed as being out of the last 1,000 visitors or something.

As you know, websites like yours can experience huge traffic as people e-mail the link to friends or post them on discussion websites such as DS.

Having some well placed Google Adsense adverts on your website could bring revenue to fund your projects. Some of the other members here with more experience with Adsense may be able to help.

One suggestion: it would be great when clicking on a photo to enlarge, to have each photo open in a new window to allow further browsing of your website (and clicks on Adsense ads ) while the photos are loading.

Good luck with your website and experiments!

    Amazing images.

It may be worth looking at something like cafepress and producing some branded merchandise.
When using google for counts - use double quotes for usage counts for multiword terms and set "match type" to "exact" for all search volume lookups. Click here for more info

    Thanks for that.
The separate window is a thought but I would hate to have to go back through 1000 photos to reassign then.

I still am divided about ads. I am not interested if the income is small and it disrupts the layout of my site. This is a not for profit hobby as most are, I guess.

It doesn't need to be profitable, but at least can support your habit.

That thing couldn't have been cheap.

I sure hope you know what you're doing:

BTW, your site loads exceedingly slowly for me.

    Welcom aboard Peter!

I saw your pic in the May 2007 IEEE Spectrum magazine, pages 18-19 "center fold" style (but not in the center). So I'm sure you got the attention of a couple hundred thousand Engineers.

Nobody hates over advertising on web sites more than me but if you put a minimal Adsense box, perhaps vertical on top right side, it would not bother me and I doubt it would bother many others.

I also but you could find a couple of web "hobby shops" that would be interested in direct sponsorship, say 2 of them top left and top right as banner ads. Just the legiamacy of being in IEEE spectrum (ie "geeks" who are likely to share their geekness with their kids) should get them to consider placing an adv directly with you. Of course Adsense is no work, gettin sponsors is work, thus Adsense is so well embraced.

Trust me when I tell you that the quality of cafepress merchandise is extremely poor. Save your time, effort and money on something worthwhile.

Peter, those are some awesome pics. Although the ad income may not be substantial, it could pay for your hosting and other overhead. Perhaps, you could upgrade to a dedicated server, so that you don't need to worry about your account getting suspended again for data transfer overages.

In regards to the photos, I'd be interested at what camera you are using and also the settings used for the various photos. Do you generally use the same set up for the photos?

You have taken many fine photos, congrats.

We need to see if we can get him to do a "DomainState" lightening Logo.

I use a Nikon D20s which I won as a photo comp prize in a newspaper for a Tesla coil shot.
This has really made a huge difference , particularly the ability to take long exposures. Some shots have up to 10 minute exposure. Typically for sparks it might be 2-30 seconds. Sometimes the long exposure is just helpful to catch an explosive event without complicated triggering. Turn on camera, fire, turn off camera. I use an IR remote to avoid movement.
I also have a 180mm macro/telephoto lens for fine stuff. It focuses at 40cm so far enough away to take safe photos of high voltage stuff.

And the site loading slowly? There are a large number of pages and a video on page one. It does load from top down though so if you are reading anything you shouldn't notice once the first photo loads. And you just have to wait for the first photo.

The IEEE Spectrum article made me laugh. I'm not sure a piece of tape catching on fire was hot news for engineers out of context. In context, it implied that a high voltage rod might fall on me...
