Ever Heard of a Registrar Taking a Customer's Domain And Selling It?

We've heard through the grapevine that a major domain owner is initiating legal action against Dodora, claiming that the registrar actually took one of his names and sold it on the open market! We've heard complaints about registrars losing domains through lax security, or returning them to a previous registrar (without even notifying the current owner) when claims of theft have been made - but this is the first time we have heard allegations of a registrar selling a name from a customer's portfolio!

Can you say who this domain name owner is?

I've heard of some resellers doing this before. Seeing something valuable enough to rob one customer blind, and close up shop. While I probably shouldn't be, I'd be surprised if this were a clean cut case of theft.

As few domain names as they'd had registered, Dodora has been a SnapNames partner for a while. It would be a wreckless and dangerous move to be sure.

The owner doesn't want to go public at this stage (undoubtedly a lot of legal considerations come into play here). As I think you know I wouldn't even post such allegations if there weren't real people involved. If something is going on owners should be aware of it though. I am hopeful there is an honest explanation for it - the idea that a registrar would do this on purpose is mind boggling - but that is what is being alleged.

I have seen a bit of resellers trying to sell names as soon as they hit the expiration date, even with the names still showing the old owner as registrant.

The worst part is that one of the buyers is one of the Big 3.
I have seen a few "Prime expired spanish domains" (expired longer than 6 months)
    Whois contact:
    Unpaid domain dept.
Overnight whois changes to a big name...

I'll double check on this, but it was my impression that the expiration date wasn't part of the scenario. Just a very high quality name from the owner's account that was allegedly sold outright.

Checked back on this and was told the domain was nowhere near expiration. The claim is that a third party contacted Dodora about how to buy this name and Dodora allegedly sold it to that person right out of their customer's account (without letting the owner know). It is almost too flagrant to believe but my source has always been honest with me in the past, so I can't just dismiss this report. I have never had any dealings with Dodora personally, but if something like this has occurred I want to let those who have domains there know they should stay alert until all of the facts come out.

Dodora = Register fly = expire fish = nameparking (or whatever it is)

Nothing suprises me when it's coming from them.

Although if this is for real, and how he explains, that's overly durastic. Wouldn't ICANN pull the plug for that?

If Duke's source is correct, it's an astoundingly stupid thing for the registrar to have done.

    Remember

Dodora has said that "frankly we don't give a damn" when asked about negative posts on the forums.

That is why they will have no clients in a while.
I had about 15 domains with them and now have 0 at last!
