I think the point here is that out of the page updating and content updating, which one is more favorable? Like if we update content it means writing new posts, and if we update page it means making changes to the already written content or page. So which one out of these two helps more in giving good SERP.

So it would bring traffic towards your site. As much as people like your site it may have a chance that Google would give you good page rankings as well. But back links do concern in this regard. One should work hard to get back links as well. Both the back links and the new contents will give ones site really a boost.

in fact for high PR both is good : fresh content and update the out-dates articles.. plus getting a good backlinks from good high PR websites... avoide spamming and you will be on the right way to get a high PR..
