Traffic You Get For Position #1

Ever wondered how much more traffic you get for being #1 on a search term compared to being in position #2 or worse, on page 2. Well I picked these stats up from a blog and unfortunately ive lost the url but I recently saw a similar stat on an SEO site that had approximately the same figures.

From my own experiences, this has been shown to be quite accurate overall as I have found that I get approximately 300% more traffic if im in position 1 than if im in position 2 for a specific search term:

    Click Rank1: 2,075,765 42.13%
    Click Rank2: 586,100 11.90%
    Click Rank3: 418,643 8.50%
    Click Rank4: 298,532 6.06%
    Click Rank5: 242,169 4.92%
    Click Rank6: 199,541 4.05%
    Click Rank7: 168,080 3.41%
    Click Rank8: 148,489 3.01%
    Click Rank9: 140,356 2.85%
    Click Rank10: 147,551 2.99%

    1st page: 4,425,226 89.82%
    2nd page: 501,397 10.18%

Interesting figures Kyric. I've never taken the time to attempt to find such data.

Yep.... it surprises me that you 42% for position 1 and then drops to approx 12% for position 2.

Position 1 makes such a big difference to how much traffic you pull from the keyword. Although I once read somewhere that position 2 and 3 actually convert better in traffic/conversion sense.... as people are more proactive in making that choice.

    Yep your right.

I remember that back in the days GoTo had similar stats about the positions of ppc ads, to make bidders fight for #1.

But it was well known that best ROI was the cheaper positions if the title/product offer/description was good enough on the ppc ads, since a motivated buyer still would visit lower positions.

Agree that the data are rather interesting as we all want to be with pr 10 but not always realise for which particular reason. But it is still interesting that according to you 2 is worse that 1...

Unfortunately, I've seen too many irrelevant 1st google search result recently. Sometimes, you can trick google, but you can't trick the visitor. Make sure you deliver what the users searches for.

And yes, the difference is huge.
