when we hear words such as " Algorithmic Search Engine Optimisation"
I don't think this service is targeted for developers (not even WP hogs)
1. Google (and i guess most SEs copy this in some way) was built on pagerank which is based on the number of incoming links to your site. more links, more important (like how often your paper is cited in the academic community). of course its gotten smarter as time went by, links should be from relevant websites, what the links say counts, etc
2. SEs want to rank what is most useful to their users highest. so design and build it usefully (proper headers, text formatting, etc) makes a big difference (using h1 - header - tags are a great SEO tool). Also important is your titles. Unique content is also important to avoid getting tossed in duplicate content bin (omitted search results that nobody will ever see)
