I'm pretty sure this has posted before, but here it goes. Why not have a point system, like some other boards, that reward for each post which they can then use for domain names, exchange for money, etc.?

It is a reasonable question and it has come up.

In my classes, I do not give people points to students when they speak out because I would rather people be motivated to speak because they have something to say -- not to fill the air to rack up points.

For my two cents, I feel the same way about posts. If you incentivize posts, then you get more posts, but do you get an equal amount of additional worthwhile information? On balance, I think that providing an incentive to post can do more harm than good.

Also, there are already many rewards for participating in this forum, I have found there to be tons in terms of information, tips to make money, friends, humor, etc.

domainstate has a good solid reputation for having good quality posts which when you finish reading them you feel like you just
came out knowing more than you did before

a point system or some sort of DNF$ alternative will see the quality of posts slip and will most likely get people joining and posting only to get these points to "sell" or trade for domain names

Totally against a point system. This just starts the crap posts by the thousands like "great name" "way to go" "" "unbelievable" "bump" "really" "good luck" and the hundred other useless posts like that... that serve no purpose.

The content of posts here at DS is quite high ... lets keep it that way! IMHO

So true indeed. Maybe if you could come up with a point system for quality posts, or transactions that take place on domainstate, there might be something there, but getting rewarded just for posting seems bogus...

Plus imagine all the people who've been posting here for a year, where's our backpoints!

I'm not for or against a point system as it would/could enhance a forum and add another dimension to it, but I just wanted to say that people "bump" and and all the time in single format replies. I generally agree with you, aactive, when point systems are implemented, another agenda comes into the air when posts are created--and I would call it "crap", too.

If someone could come up with a good reward system that doesn't include rewarding actual total of posts, I'd listen.

I can't speak for the other two amigos though

I think giving out points for posts in any shape or form is a bad idea. It probably would increase posting and traffic to the forum but it would also probably lessen the quality of the posts and change the character of the forum. The points or rewards will act as an incentive to post period. The incentive should come from the desire to communicate, sharing and learning not for the want of a point or a reward.

Better imo to do things like the quiz or have contests or some other creative thing if you want more eyes than do points for posts (for volume or quality).


If you were really considering such a system, one way to do it is to let people vote on posts and posts that receive a certain number of votes and average (like the appraisal system here) could be issued a point. And these points could be redeemable for whatever. But still, I'm not so this would add much to the attractiveness of this forum. Not so sure there would be much use of it either.

I agree, that sounds much more fulfilling than simply giving out points for posts...

One more thing, aren't points a way for boards who take your money to give you something back...

Otherwise these guys will be paying for more bandwidth of more people posting for rewards that in long run will cost them something if not money but time, and I think they do put quite alot of time in as it is...

What we *could* have is a Karma system - if someone posts a good post and people like it, then they could donate points or similar to the poster. This would encourage authoratative and concise posts.

yes the problem with the points for posts idea is it encourages junk and off track posting, we pretty much ruled it out from day one.

I tend to also thing it is a distraction away from what the site is really about, which is discussing domains, not buying and selling a fictional currency.
