DomainState a Business or hobby for the owners?
I am just curious how DomainState makes any money? I don't see any advertising on the site. Not that that is a bad thing but I like the site and for it to survive in this business it needs some type of income.

It's not run to make money, we make money from our domaining - this is for fun
(I wouldn't worry about surviving, we've been running since 2002 without turning into an ad-fest)
When using google for counts - use double quotes for usage counts for multiword terms and set "match type" to "exact" for all search volume lookups. Click here for more info

That's to bad. A little advertising wouldn't hurt and would help with your hosting costs at least IMO.

bd77, welcome to DomainState!
Actually the lack of advertising at DomainState is great. It is refreshing to not see the site plastered with ads and it helps to increase productivity by keeping everyone focused on business. As a member, the only requirement is to follow the rules. If you find DomainState useful, you can show your appreciation by contributing your knowledge to help others.

I often think of DS as also like a Wall Street / Financial District bar after the market closes each day.

Welcome to DomainState, bd77. This topic was actually discussed here a few years ago (if you dig in the archives, you'll probably find it), but the three owners of DomainState decided from the beginning to not make this a profit-driven site, preferring to keep DS as free from outside influences as possible, so that there would be no constraints on discussion other than professionalism and civility.
However, the site is not entirely advertising-free. If you look at the "Making money from domains with parking and full site solutions" forum, you'll see that our three wily moderators/owners have embedded a lucrative DomainSponsor link. Ka-ching!

Lucrative?
Ka-ching?
I venture to say neither one of these terms apply.

Glad to be of service.
Domo: I'll try to remember to use more smilies in my postings, just for you.

Bingo.
As the years have passed, I've been less inclined to use smiley's when humour is intended. It's more fun. Some get the humour, some are horrified by what I've said, others simply aren't sure.
In your case, knowing you and your sense of humour I got it, domo missed it and was horrified and I'll bet others weren't sure.
