Silent Treatment: Add 2.5% to shopping Cart :)

    Very interesting.

You guys are charging 2.5% (on top of sales commission) to keep sales from being published.

How long has this been going on?

I have not been charged for this "service" in the past. Though it has been a few years since I have asked Sedo to keep a sale private.

One thing about this is the VAT number of the body you are dealing with remains hidden.

Trying to get these VAT numbers out of sedo is like trying to get a beer off a banker. Recently I had to eMail the other party. I would be interesting to see what the European tax bodies would make of this..

I would be ok with a standard price Ie a couple hundred dollars but on big sales that adds up quickly almost as much as just using there escrow service

Yea, imagine my surprise and horror when I made them 10% on my six figure sale only to have them try and tack on another 2.5% for keeping quiet. Hello extortion. I have always found Sedo to be filled with bureacratic small-mindedness that simply doesn't suit this industry's nature.

As I mentioned on Eliot's blog, I'll use the individual Sedo broker again as she did a great job, but I'd think twice if I ever had to pay that fee. I actually kind of feel sorry for someone like her who's good at what she does, but hamstring by the stupidity of her bosses.

Sedo always does everything they can to piss off domainers. No wonder this is the first time I've used them to sell one of my domains.

I agree, but was reffering to there escrow only service which is 3 percent this 2.5 is almost the same when all they have to do is have both parties agree.

Indeed, as a buyer, I felt the same way. Note the 2.5% is on the entire transaction price, not 2.5% on just the brokerage fee. So, on a standard 10% brokerage fee, they're essentially make an extra 25% for doing less work.

When I really have a " beef " is when I bring the transaction to them (brokerage request)...

A couple of brokers (one Senior) I know have let Top mgmt know of Domainer's feelings in this issue to no avail...

    Hi,

In your view, who should be paying the 2.5% ? The seller or the buyer ? Who has most interest in the transaction to be kept private ?

    Regards,
    Max

    There shouldn't be a '2.5%'.
This is a figure made up by Sedo to offer a 'service' that nobody asked for or wants.
Sedo lost the plot a long time ago - I'm glad to see the back of these vultures.

What do you mean no-one wants the service ? It looks to me like everyone wants it !

I meant the figure was made up to basically provide what should be taken for granted and for free. All they need to do is have a default situation where they will report the sale *unless* you specify otherwise. This should not be charged for. They already take 10% for the escrow - imagine if escrow.com started releasing your sales information unless you pay them a fee! - it's just extortion under a different name. Also how did they arrive at this magic 2.5% number? What's to stop them making it 5% or 10%? It's tantamount to protection money in my book - pay up or else. A 'service' is something provided to you not something you pay for to prevent an action. Next time you sell a domain on this forum try adding on a random % in order to keep the sale price quiet - see how far you get. Maybe they could charge even more to offer you the 'service' of not releasing your name, address, and contact details along with the sale price as well. Seems some people wouldn't mind paying.
