The way domain registrars make up their own rules, I would transfer the free domain away at least 60 days before it expires. PLUS, in the fine print, they my not let you transfer the domain the first year, better check that out...I'm not interested in that offer, I rather pay $10 bucks and know I own the domain and renews at the same price.
