Auction disaster?: SES Live auction yields $19k in sales

Is this the lowest result ever for a live auction?

The Search Engine Strategies live domain auction by Moniker/SnapNames came in with a total sales volume of $19,950 on 26 domain names sold. The top sale of the day was Groceries.us at $4000. Reports from Moniker staff indicated that the audience size at the event was around 100 people.

There are far too many different venues and auctions now for that business model to be successful as it was in the past, combined with the slowing market especially between domainers. The market is saturated with sales events because of all the upstarts who were envious of the Domain Kings success and wanted to emulate him and do it using other means too such as online auctions.

It's kind of an obscure subject as far as auctions go to auction names off of the topic. Someone might as well come up with an auction event targeting domaining names, and it might do as well.

Yeah. You know the market is saturated when your little cousin forgoes the lemonade stand for a domain stand.

Getting above reg fee for spanishinvesting.com or seoproduct.com and many of the others was a great achievement. Not enough to justify the auction, but good for those sellers.

Yes, but if I go to snapnames and look at the extended auction, sort by bids, I see over 10 million dollars in bids, including 5.4M for webportal.com. I'm not sure if I am interpreting this correctly or not (real bids or starting bids) but bidders are > 0.

Those must be the reserve prices, even though Snapnames call them "minimum bid". If you click the symbol next to "in auction" to add it to your "watching" list you see the actual high bid, which on webportal.com is currently at $79 with 3 bidders.

Ah, I see. The column says 'Minimum Bid' with an amount of $5M and 3 bidders. Confusing.

I knew something had to be wrong. Nobody was going to bid 5M on a $$$ name (except for possibly the E8 guy)

I'll be holding an auction this weekend, on an extremely safe corner in a very nice part of Norristown. We'll be almost 2 blocks away from trouble. Oh and bring cash only.

It was so sad you had to laugh

I just think they had the wrong group of people to sell to and the wrong names

Very bad day to hold this auction also

I say no more auction in 2008
