How long do you register a name for?

When I register a name, sometimes, I register it for one year onlky. If I find it was a stupid name, then I'm out only a small amount of money. But a few of my names, I have registered for as far out as I can. Some of these names are sentimental and are only special to me.

While others seem to have generated interest.

This leaves me to my 2nd question. If I own a name that is registered for several years, and I transfer it to another registrar, do I loose extra years? Or does it all come over to the new registrar? After transferring, does it revert back to 1 year?
