In my opinion - domain name itself worth nothing. Only web site makes your domain name better or worse.

To an extent, there is element of truth in your opinion. But do you know that there are some keywords that has organic traffic when newly registered ? Though the traffic may not be much, but when the right domain, theme, website and relevant niche are combined, it becomes more better. In my own view I think both sides must be ok to achieve early result. Cheers.

It's just branding, I would say . The most expensive domains are generic - yahoo, google,etc...

Mind you; Google and yahoo are brandable domains and not generics. They are both branded for what they are doing.
If you want a meaningful contributions, you should let us know your fear.
However, if you are buying a highly ranked domain; make sure the domain is old, short and should pass phone test. And make sure it is free from trade mark infringement. You can check that on trademakia.com and also check it on wayback website to see if it has not being used for bad practice. Cheers and good luck.
