Wrong:
If they could they will use the dot com in a New York minute.
I can really see that been discussed in Marketing Meetings "let's stand out from all the dot com's..."
Pleeeease.

I completely agree with you that this does not happen nor should it happen.
However, I do not agree that this is an invalid approach. A .COM with a pure play PPC site looks and feels very different than an unbiased end user / developer site. So I do feel that a non .COM site can easily "stand out" when the .COM is a pure play PPC or parking site. So if the non .COM site does what the user wanted and the PPC site provided the visitor *NOTHING* of what they wanted, then here we do stand out. Of course I'm in no way suggesting that this works for a bricks and morter company, but it could work for a pure internet company -- Again it will cost more and take longer to promote the non .COM and that cost should be tallied to see if it's equal to or greater than the cost of outright purchase of the .COM (if it's more then using the non .COM is financially stupid).
I'd argue that the above is exactly why PPC engines are trying so hard to look like end user developed sites ...... These days everyone knows the differance ... Everyone .....
And nothing would help non .COM TLDs more than to have every single .COM driven by a PPC page. So I ask you all to continue to catch traffic names and DNS them into yet another PPC engine. *PLEASE* do this for all .COMs ASAP! Thanks!

They can't have the dot com because is already taken and in use or they are to cheap to pay for it, so they pay less for the domain but a lot more for Marketing the domain with the less desirable extension.
I do see more of this scenario happening:
Well established mark : volvo vw bmw audi etc etc , differentiating from other (even subsidiaries) by using CC's
eg: volvo.us
audi.es
bmw.co.uk etc etc.

Agreed 100%!
This is the false economics I've been trying to point out for a very long time now regarding the idea of purchasing a new TLD over .COM. However if the new TLD seems better suited than .COM then, in the long run, the new TLD might be worth the investment since it makes more sense and thus is more memorable, but this mean we accept the new TLDs as niche TLDs and limit their use to the niche they are best suited for -- To do otherwise is *EXACTLY* like saying the TLD does not matter and it's just a random string of characters with no meaning.

LOL 100% WRONG wrong to the point it's amusing..
Hotels.com has a MULTI million dollar advertising campaign on TV alone...not even counting the millions it spends for print adverts
Whats going on here? Hotels.com shouldnt have to advertise at all under the .com'ers typ-in false sense of business
Hotels.Biz that 218 saw on a cab wont have to spend a dime more then Hotels.com to get basically the same amount of traffic minus the type-ins AND Hotels.com is a REAL business that fully understands that they would have to file for Bankruptcy if they tried to survive on just type-ins.

You are comparing the behavior of a mature company in a commodity industry to an new and unknown company trying to startup. We are refering to the latter not the former.

ah... an insignificant fact and perhaps a small detail

Thats the whole point Robert..Hotels.com couldnt survive on type-ins alone..they HAVE to advertise..so much for the .com King dosent need no stinking Search engines , TV and Print advertising...the facts are in the REAL world of business type-ins are like cookie crumbs..
The Facts are the only people typeins really matter to are the crumb chasers .. that NEEDS to be your whole business..to live off the crumbs ..ULT took crumb chasing to absolute the highest level ..he needed 100K domains to make it to that level ..
Thats why Hotels .com or any other ".com" isnt that valuable to any ONE business..REAL WORLD business..they understand that type-ins reflect may reflect only a percentage or 2 of overall traffic that they will need to grow on.
Real business around the world build in .co.uk , .DE , .Info , .Kr , .Us , .Net even .Ws because real business understands it takes a variety of advertising to get the traffic needed for survival and that they can build in ANY space..
Thats why .com has fallen to under 50% of all webspace ... this is the TREND ..Websites are being built in every imaginable extension by HIGHLY respectable busienesses around the world every single day and guess what the .com domainers arent nearly as picky as you think they are..they are picking up "type-in" traffic on .coms , on .nets ,on .CC ,.US , .co.uk , .tv's and everyone knows if I would ever let Airlines.ws drop every damn one of you .com'rs would be beating each other over the heads with clubs to pickit on the drop..
and then proudly proclaim what a great type-in traffic name you just picked up (and you'd be right) LOLOL
It's just to damn funny anymore
Look at the damn sales report at DNjournal ..hell what took top spot this week a .LU ? 21k 3 of the top 4 sales were to extensions OTHER then .com
Oh my God was the fool really advertising a .LU ?
was that really a .Biz I seen on that Cab
Was that .Ws on a Las Vegas Marquee last week !
Get use to it..it is NOT just a .com world anymore..if you thinkn it is move to Montana with all the hermits

I don't longer see other tld's advertised on the major tv networks ... a couple of years ago I saw a few .infos and .tvs but not anymore .
I mainly watch cnn discovery cnbc and the weather channel ...
Is it because is not worth it.... were they sending traffic to the dot com's , surely they were but was the loss significant ?

All we can do is sit back and wait...heh we've been doing this for years now...
We should come up with a reasonable cut off date that we expect .info/.biz to become mainstream. That way at least some of you can run around and say I told you so...
If no date, then in theory the new extension speculators can always say, just wait...

218 ..cutoff dates ? Look at trends that shows you where the growth really is..
To many people are playing the lottery instead of building business in their selected extensions...
I'm not sure what everyone is waiting for ..the advertisers are paying good money to send them customers... you have your .info , your .Biz, your .ws ... whats everyone waiting for ? BUILD or chase dropping .biz, .us ,.info , . de ,.ws website domains ..because thats really all the .com drops are anymore also ..traffic that someone else has built..
Right now there are people quietly working these new tld and ccTLD drops ..even some well known supposedly red blooded .com'rs only people ..
Opportunity abounds in the alternatives just as they do in .com .. build or chase drops .your prefernce .. but this sitting back and waiting fopr something to happen is just a waste of time IMO..
just showing you my perspective..I cant stand to wait for things to happen .. and my preference is to mostly build..and pick up drops as a little side action..
