True for the gTLDs, but many ccTLDs are doing quite well.

I think that cumulatively the ccTLDs are growing faster than .com. When domain tasting was curtailed in .com, the growth patterns became more apparent. While .com is not going to be knocked off its top position as the dominant global TLD, the reality is that ccTLDs are going to take a lot of the volume growth away from .com and the other gTLDs.

The interesting thing about .mobi is that it is not suffering from quite the rout that people expected. The number of new regs between 01/October and 01/November was 22593. The number of deletions from the zone was 29546. The 01/October figure zone count was 956412 and the 01/November count was 949460.

Frankly, those prices don't seem that distant from prices achieved back in late 2007. Of course, your negative slant on .mobi is also a factor in your selective reporting of facts.

For such an unimportant extension, you sure seem to follow it closely. What's the matter, your .com revenue in the toilet?

Given the volume of posts .mobi supporters were making back when the music was playing it seems logical that there will be posts made now that the music has stopped.

It's a tld that has never been backed up by end user money in the aftermarket - only domainer hope and hype so far.

I'm not quite sure about the drop cycle on .mobi as these figures are based on domains dropping out of the zonefile. If the normal drop cycle is applied in .mobi then there should be domains dropping already from the August/September deletions. The next few months (typically five months or so after the anniversary) should be critical for .mobi. The negative growth figure for .mobi should go more negative over the next few months but the fact that new regs are closely tracking deletions makes it a bit strange. Some indications of the health of .mobi should happen later this month as more drops begin to kick in.

This is what will be most interesting. Will the domainer market be sufficient in the short term to maintain the growth of .mobi or will some element of development kick in after the Junk Dump?

A lot of Web 2.0 style companies seemed to be concentrating on .mobi from 2006-2007. Some of them, in Ireland anyway, seem to be those university/third level college campus companies where fodder from the universities pretend to be in business while still being paid by their respective colleges. What I did notice with a lot of companies focusing on .mobi was that there was very little genuine innovation - a lot of the ideas were based on directory models with an element of localisation or beboesque social networking and review sites. The key to the future of .mobi is development. And the .mobi registry is definitely driving that forward with tools and help. However that effort has to be met with users and the use of .mobi sites.

They are already being dropped and caught - drops started before the landrush anniversary due to the pre-landrush trademark regs etc.

Geos seemed to do ok in JP's auction - durban.mobi $1284 is another one.

I think they switched to allowing 1-year registrations in the first year, so some of those plus the sunrise (pre-landrush) have been dropping.

If someone bought a domain on the first day of the landrush, owned it for the entire 2 years, but doesn't plan to renew it, we can use the WHOIS for that domain to try to figure out their drop cycle. (although some might keep that as proprietary knowledge; I'm just curious to see how much the zone shrinks once all those names drop).

That might explain a huge spike in deletions on a Chinese hoster earlier this year. It was way out of profile for .mobi.
