http://domains.above.com/ is a a registrar and I can tell you that a we make on average $0.50 profit per domain registration per year. For larger clients the profit margin is next to nothing.

So I know for a fact that most registrars do not make more than domainers, unless domainers have a portfolio of names that does not cover the yearly registraion fees.

Don't forget that from every .com registration:
icann gets $0.18 to $0.20
verisign gets $7.34

Now add the yearly icann fees, servers, hardware, iron mountain fees, chargebacks/fraud, staff etc...
So a registrar is left with next to nothing.

they go for domain sales.they sell domains either through themselves or become a reseller. to become a reseller all you need to do is purchase a reseller account from some provider like this Goresellers.com on monthly or yearly basis. you can just sell the domains and make the profit.
