    google to offer localised ads

"Under a new program set to begin on Thursday, a pet store in Boston, for instance, can specify that it wants to reach Google users in the Boston area only. Or a national company can have different ads run in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. "

"Elsewhere, merchants can enter their address and a radius, in miles or kilometres, around which to target. So an Indian merchant can type in a New Delhi address and have the ad appear on computers located within 50 kilometres of the business.

Websites can also target ads based on their latitude and longitude. "

Do you folks think that this could benefit city (or other local) geographic portal sites?

Seems to me that it might...

better - more- succesful "targeted" "niche" advertisment = more advertisers...
More demand from advertisers = higher bids = higher $ payout.
Google didn't jump to do this for no reason....
    Very well thought careful move...

Yes, a smart move by Google which should get higger bids etc. Unfortunately from reading the article (hope I am reading it wrong) it appears only adwords advertisers can target geographically ads they place, but not adsense publishers.

That is not good news for publishers who are plagued by ongoing odd targeting, i.e. a State of Texas real estate broker site with adsense on it from say a broker in Oregon looking for Oregon listings, and similar poor targeting with many websites.

Hopefully geo targeting will also apply to adsense, if not now perhaps soon.

I assume you are asking from the viewpoint of benefiting an adsense publisher and not regarding being an adwords advertiser? Please correct me if wrong.

    The future is Fantastic...
Imagine SE's getting better at connecting the dots or connecting interested parties.
I am guessing as technology gets better tracing queries' locations to match the results will be easier...
    All parties involved should benefit.

Such great targeting would sure benefit EPC, CTR big time, and income. Let's hope the big G implements the technology in adsense and not just adwords, as it appears.

Does anyone know if it will be applicable for both?

you think this is good news for ppc ?

i think it might be bad, alot of ads could dissapear, if the advertisers can select more specificallty what they want.

example u have a domain parked which had a lot of crap/non usa or area specific. now, the company can filter this out, which means a lot less clicks for your traffic

they might target more generally again, however, after trying it , since i think it would be difficult to get all the traffic some sites wanted, from restricting to locality .

adsense runs only adwords ads so can't see how it wouldn't apply.
