Is there a flowchart for a typical login process with authentication and sessions for logging onto a website?

I think that the login is a very simple and direct process and authentication should only be used where it is necessary. I mean, in as much as you would want to employ the best technology for your web site, there only are a few things you have to implement to make it run good. You might want to check on mvc, beans and prepared statements as your sources.
