Comments anyone on if you think the .CO extension will be number #2 behind .COM in a couple years? Or do you think it will flop and be useless like a .Biz or a .Ws
Two or three years ago it would have had great prospects. But the domain market in 2010 is very different and this extension could cause a lot of legal problems with trademarks. The only thing going for it now is traffic leakage.
why would string.co be worth $500 undeveloped?
Earlier you stated that you know very little about this but then you say you were prepared to 'plop down big money'. I would *really* recommend reading through the forum and understanding the hype surrounding new extensions (and how they've all failed even after the hype) before wasting your money. It seems you may have already made your mind up but the people in this thread who have told you they are worthless have been in this industry a lot of years successfully - you would do well to heed their caution.
I really appreciate your thoughts and advice. Really I do value your advice and the advice of the two other replies.
"recommend reading through the forum and understanding the hype surrounding new extensions (and how they've all failed even after the hype"
Can I ask a question about your statement above? Has every "new extension" that has ever come out failed?
At one time .NET and .ORG were new extensions right?
Now I understand .ws - .biz - .info - .us all are quite worthless, but this .CO being so close to the extension of .COM ... do you think there is an inkling of a chance they might catch on and surpass at least .ORG in a couple years?
here's one last straight up question if you would please humor me. as far as your knowledge of domain name and with your best guess, do you really think that if I paid a lot of money for JEWELRY.CO .... can you say without any doubt that it would be worthless undeveloped?
yes - it has taken years for .net and .org to reach a fraction of the value of .coms. Since those we've had umpteen new extensions - none of which have commanded high prices for premium terms even at a few dollars reg fee. Any value in new launches has been due to 'pump and dump' hype - .mobi is a good example of this. It's ok if you can be the one selling the donkey but you really don't want to be lumbered with feeding it. Your money would be better spent on existing opportunities with proven track records.
However if you have a business plan to buy, for example, jewelry.co (note different spellings between US and Europe) then of course you can *create* value. However you are always going to lose traffic to the .com if you establish your site.
On another note landrushes are usually flawed anyway - chances are you won't even get a sniff at anything premium even though your money will be tied up with registrars forever.
